What is Psychomotricity?
According to the U.S Psychomotricity Forum, Psychomotricity is the study of the human being from an integrated perspective. It considers an individual’s development through the interdependence of emotion, movement, cognition and relationship.
Psychomotricity is practiced with people of all ages, specializing in three areas: Education, Health and Community Outreach. It is both a developmental and therapeutic practice, working on emotional, relational, behavioral and motor challenges. It is characterized by working with the potential of the individual.
After goals are set, the psychomotrician then utilizes the strengths, interests and desires unique to that person as tools to reach those goals. The psychomotrician supports and accompanies individuals in finding improved ways to be at ease in their own body, to better relate with others/the environment and foster healthy development.
Psychomotricity around the world
Psychomotricy was founded in France. In 1947 the first psychomotor therapists training program was held at Henri Rousselle Hospital. The approach quickly became valued and recognized internationally and is now practiced in over 60 countries throughout the world.
